Abseiling Rules
Rules in the Sport of Abseiling
Abseiling is primarily a technique used in climbing, rescue, and adventure sports, but it is also practiced as a competitive sport in some regions. Competitive abseiling events focus on speed, precision, and safety. The rules can vary depending on the competition, but general guidelines apply.
Equipment Regulations
Harness & Helmet – All competitors must wear a certified climbing harness and helmet for safety.
Ropes & Anchors – Only approved ropes and secure anchor points can be used.
Descender Device – A designated belay/descender device (e.g., ATC, Figure 8, GriGri) must be used.
Backup Safety System – Some competitions require a Prusik knot or an auto-locking device as a safety backup.
Competition Rules & Scoring
Competitors must descend a set height as fast as possible while maintaining control.
Time is measured from the moment they start descending until both feet touch the ground.
Penalties apply for mistakes (e.g., loss of control, improper technique).
Technical Precision Category
Judges assess technique, including smooth descent, body positioning, and braking control.
Penalties are given for improper form, jerky movement, or failure to use a backup system.
Obstacle & Challenge Events
Some competitions include obstacles, jumps, or direction changes to test skill and adaptability.
Athletes may need to switch ropes mid-air, land on targets, or navigate tight spaces.
